When applying for a national visa for Germany, you will be required to present certain German language certificates to prove your language proficiency, if required. In this article, we will look at the institutions and exams that allow you to prove your knowledge of German, which may be required for a family reunification visa, an Opportunity Card or a student visa for Germany.

Goethe-Institut
The Goethe-Institut is Germany’s most renowned language institute and offers internationally recognized German language certificates. Language certificates are available from A1 to C2 levels. Goethe certificates are commonly used to obtain a work, study or residence permit in Germany.
The validity period of your language certificate is generally unlimited, but many institutions and employers may request certificates obtained within the last 2 years.

Telc (The European Language Certificates)
Telc offers German language certificates at various levels from A1 to C2. Telc certificates can be used for different types of visas in Germany, such as a residence permit, work permit or family reunification visa. However, Telc A1 certificates are not valid in some countries, please check the requirements for your country.
ÖSD (Austrian Language Diploma)
The ÖSD is the Austrian language diploma and is also recognized in Germany. It offers certificates at levels from A1 to C2. ÖSD certificates can be used for residence permits, work permits or study in Germany. These certificates are an ideal option to prove your German language proficiency on an international level.
TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache)
TestDaF is an internationally recognized test to measure knowledge of German. Language proficiency at level B2 or C1 is usually required for universities and job applications. Providing an official German language certificates, TestDaF is organized through many test centers around the world.
ECL Exam Center for German language certificates
The ECL (European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages) Examination Center is the responsible body for language exams and the exams are conducted by AFI GmbH. ECL certificates can be used for residence permits, work permits or training in Germany.
ECL offers exams covering language levels from A1 to C2 in accordance with the European Language Portfolio.
